Living as a Woman in the Muslim World

A first-hand look at the experience of living as a woman in Saudi Arabia in the 1990s.

Dr. Gillian Hettinger will offer a first-hand look at the experience of living as a woman in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday, February 15 at 7:30 pm at Bernardsville Public Library. While completing her doctorate in the early 1990’s, her husband accepted a job working in the telecommunications industry for the Saudi Arabian government in Riyadh, and she took a leave from her teaching position to join him there.

She will speak about her personal experiences living in the Muslim world, her initial impressions, day-to-day encounters and lasting memories. "I basically approach my talk as an innocent abroad," she says, "I had to accommodate to the demands of living in a different world and I get my audience to go along with me on my journey. Saudi Arabia is beautiful, exotic, fascinating and terrifying."
Dr. Hettinger holds a doctorate in British literature from Drew University. Currently teaching at William Paterson University, she has been awarded multiple fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation.

There is no charge to attend the program, but advance sign-up is requested. Please note start time. Register online at www.bernardsvillelibrary.org and follow the link from Adult Programs, or call the library at 908-766-0118 to sign up.
