Local Author to Sign Books at Bernardsville Library
Alan A. Winter will speak about and sign copies of his new book, "Island Bluffs,"a multi-layered story of forgiveness and understanding.

Bernardsville Public Library is pleased to announce that local author and Bernardsville resident Alan A. Winter will speak about and sign copies of his newest book, “Island Bluffs,” at the Library on Wednesday, June 10 at 7:00 pm. Mr. Winter’s previous book “Savior’s Day,” was selected as a “Best Book of 2013” by Kirkus Review. Both books will be available at the library for purchase and signing.
“Island Bluffs,” which takes place in New Jersey, is a multi-layered story of forgiveness and of understanding the dark side of the human spirit. It plumbs the question: are children and grandchildren accountable for the sins of their parents? It is also a love story wrapped around a tale about the Jersey shore, the German Bund prior to World War II, a rogue German submarine that defied orders and attacked the East Coast, and a town with a secret it hoped would stay buried for all eternity…but did not. Though fiction, the book is based on true events.
Of “Island Bluffs” Kirkus Review wrote, “Winter keeps what could have been a fairly predictable plot moving briskly, and the climactic series of revelations is handled with smooth control and a good deal of dark humor...An atmospheric and engrossing modern-day Gothic tale about the lengths to which a desperate couple will go.”
Alan A. Winter has published two other novels, “Someone Else’s Son,” which was a McNaughton Selection, and “Snowflakes in the Sahara.” His screenplay, “Polly,” received honorable mention in the Austin Film Festival and is the basis for “Island Bluffs.”
Mr. Winter graduated from Rutgers with a degree in history, which he uses to weave complex tales. He studied creative writing at Columbia University’s School for General Studies. While he has been writing fiction for thirty years, he has also earned advanced degrees in the health profession from NYU and Columbia. He was born in Newark and graduated from Livingston High School.
