NJ Audubon: World Series of Birding Event!

Once again Scherman-Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary will field teams for the World Series of Birding, the Big Stay and the Century Run (see below). We invite you to join us for the day or collect pledges to help support the conservation, education and research goals of NJ Audubon. 1. Scherman Hoffman Barkley Family Big Stay: Ron, Ben and Dan Barkley, aka the “Deckcissels” have conducted “Big Stays” on the rooftop observation deck of the Hoffman Center for 5 years, and the first year they finished in first place for the “Big Stay” category of the World Series of Birding event with a total of 80 species. Ron and Dan will lead the team this year. Pledges to their efforts will support education programs at the Hoffman Center.

2. Scherman Hoffman and Great Swamp Century Run: NJ Audubon past board member, author of For the Birds (a history of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology) and a master at recording bird songs for the “Lab of Ornithology”, Randy Little has been leading the Sanctuary and Great Swamp Century Run since 1988. As a leader, there is no better guide than Randy to help learn the intricacies of bird songs during migration. With a special use permit from the Great Swamp Wildlife Refuge, we will have access to the off-limits management area of the refuge. Our record of 102 species was set in 2002 by Randy and co-leader Neil Collins. Limit 25.
