Not-So-Hidden Heroes Revealed by Bernards High School Students

AP English class of Bernards High School published a book celebrating local heroes, with a grant from Somerset Hills Education Foundation.

The Advanced Placement English Language and Composition class of Bernards High School has published and printed a book through a grant from the Somerset Hills Education Foundation: “In Plain Sight: Recognizing the Heroes of Our Lives” celebrates local heroes whose stories are sure to inspire. The authors will be signing books and reading excerpts from their profiles at Bernardsville Public Library on Thursday, June 11 at 7:00 pm. Light refreshments will be served.

Just seventeen years old and now published authors, the students of Sky Monroe’s AP English class have been crafting these profiles for over six months, pursuing perfection in the paragraphs until these New-Yorker-magazine-style profiles were worthy of publication.

Who is profiled within the pages of the book? Perhaps a teacher before he entered education. Maybe a poker player prodding around on Wall Street. An award-winning chef turned culinary instructor. The eighteen profiles are filled with diverse individuals.

The students themselves reflect a multitude of ethnicities and backgrounds, ensuring a unique perspective on each of their profiles. From the cover art to the content, the new publication was designed by the students with the help of their teacher. The book will be available for purchase at the library program—”just $18 for 100 pages of inspiration,” the students say.

There is no charge to attend this program, but advance sign-up is requested. Register online at www.bernardsvillelibrary.org and follow the link from Adult Programs, or call the library at 908-766-0118 to sign up.
