Panel Approves Resolution To Reimburse Bedminster For Trump’s Visits

Assembly Appropriations Committeee approved Assemblyman Jack Ciattarelli's resolution reimburse Bedminster for Trump's frequent visits.

BEDMINSTER, NJ — The Assembly Appropriations Committee approved Assemblyman Jack Ciattarelli’s resolution seeking reimbursements from the federal government for President Donald Trump’s frequent visits to Bedminster and the rest of state.

The bill (AR231) urges the Washington to compensate municipalities, counties and the state for police overtime and administrative assistance each time the president arrives in the state.

“Since being elected, the president has made several trips to Trump National golf club in Somerset County,” said Ciattarelli (R-Somerset). “We welcome the president each time, keeping in mind that local and county law enforcement agencies incur additional unbudgeted expenses each time that he does.”

The bipartisan resolution notes that for the president’s visit to Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster in November cost the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office nearly $18,000 for 208 hours of overtime. More than 100 hours of overtime for the Bedminster Police cost close to $4,000. Trump returned to the golf club for a one-day visit earlier this month.

“Security in the current environment is costly, especially to communities as small as Bedminster Township and Somerset County. We’re urging Washington to reimburse New Jersey towns and counties on a timely basis. Otherwise, local taxpayers could feel the impact of these added security costs,” said Ciattarelli.

Congressman Leonard Lance (NJ-07) has also written to Attorney General Loretta Lynch in December asking the United States Department of Justice to cover the costs of security required to protect President Trump, his family and dignitaries when they visit Trump National Golf Course in Bedminster.

“Security in the current environment is incredibly complicated and costly,” said Ciattarelli. “The federal government is ultimately responsible for safeguarding the president and the first family, and we’re urging Washington to assist New Jersey towns and counties with the financial responsibility.”
