Saturday Samplers Book Group to Discuss "God Got a Dog" and Dog Songs"

Discuss "God Got a Dog by Cynthia Rylant and "Dog Songs" by Mary Oliver. Both books are reflective meditations on the world we live in.

Bernardsville Library’s book discussion group, Saturday Samplers, will meet on Saturday, May 6 at 3:30 pm to talk about "God Got a Dog (2013) by Cynthia Rylant and "Dog Songs" (2013) by Mary Oliver. [The authors will not be present.]

Cynthia Rylant's "God Got a Dog" celebrates the simple things in our world while taking a long, close look at what it means to be human. The soft, reflective, and often humorous words and pictures by Marla Frazee create a glimpse into everyday life through wide and wondering eyes that blends the familiar with the profoundly spiritual. Mary Oliver's "Dog Songs" is a celebration of the special bond between human and dog, as understood through the poet's relationship to the canines that have accompanied her daily walks, warmed her home, and inspired her work. Oliver's poems begin in the small everyday moments familiar to all dog lovers, but through her extraordinary vision these observations become higher meditations on the world and our place in it.

Led by Program/PR Assistant Evelyn Fischel, Saturday Samplers is a book discussion group dedicated to sampling various kinds of literature, including short stories, nonfiction, new and old novels, and teen fiction. Its goal is to search out interesting, noteworthy, and sometimes overlooked literary and narrative works. Readers can find information about the group and about the books and authors on the reading list at http://saturdaysamplers.blogspot.com. No sign-up is needed to join the discussion. Call the library at 766-0118 for more information.
