Somerset County Government: Somerset County Offers Free Workshop On Managing Cancer After 60

Somerville, NJ –The Somerset County Department of Health and Office on Aging & Disability Services are partnering to invite those 60 years and older affected by cancer and their caregivers to attend a six-week workshop titled “Cancer: Thriving and Surviving.” The workshop will be held virtually on Tuesdays from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., on Oct. 19, 26, and Nov. 9, 16, 23 and 30.

Participants will gain a more positive outlook about their condition and improve their state-of-mind and overall health. Workshop topics will include how to: communicate effectively with family, friends and healthcare professionals; make decisions about treatment and complementary therapies; cope with negative emotions such as feelings of isolation, frustration and uncertainty; manage pain; deal with poor sleep; and increase flexibility and endurance through exercise.

Preregistration is requested by October 12th. To register or learn more, call Lea Kimmelman at 908-203-6077 or via email kimmelman@co.somerset.nj.us. Classes are limited in size. Please register early for classes as may fill quickly. If the class is full, your registration will be mailed back to you.
Donation Cost
There is a suggested donation of $12.00. As with all Older Americans Act programs, donations are based only on a participant’s ability to pay. Donations help to expand programming. Further, donations reduce the potential for people to be placed on wait lists and may allow for expanding programming. A donation is not a fee and cannot be refunded.
Class Guidelines
Cancer: Thriving and Surviving will be held virtually via Zoom. All participants MUST use a webcam during the entire class. Phone participation is not allowed. Participants are encouraged to attend all six classes as each class builds upon the previous week.
