The Story of Michelangelo's David

Vivian Gordon, art historian and long-time lecturer in the Education Department at The Metropolitan Museum, will present an illustrated talk on Michelangelo's statue of David, at Bernardsville Public Library on Wednesday, December 13 at 7:30 pm.

In connection with the exhibit “Michelangelo: Divine Draftsman and Designer” currently on view at The Met through February 12, 2018, this talk will trace the fascinating story behind Michelangelo’s world-famous marble David in the Accademia Gallery in Florence, Italy. This colossal figure, a masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture made between 1501 and 1504 when Michelangelo was only in his mid-twenties, stands as the culmination of an almost century-long plan to install statues atop the Cathedral of Florence. It’s a tale of dashed attempts, bold experimentation, and final triumph involving some of the best known Italian Renaissance artists.
