Officers on patrol in the area of Arlington Avenue said they were near Federal Plaza around 10 p.m. when they came across a man lying in the street with an electric scooter between his legs, who was trying to get their attention by shining his cell phone flashlight.

When the officers approached and spoke to the man, he told them he couldn’t feel his legs. And that’s when they saw a small pool of blood on his shirt near his shoulder, authorities said.

One of the officers removed the man’s shirt, finding a small entry wound consistent with a gunshot. The officers began to administer first aid while calling an ambulance.

Emergency responders soon arrived and transported the victim to University Hospital in Newark, police said.

While the officers were still at the scene, they received a call about another shooting that took place at the corner of Arlington Avenue and Floyd Avenue.

The victim was reportedly shot in the torso while locking a gate on the 100-block of Arlington Avenue. He drove himself to Saint Michael’s Hospital in Newark for medical treatment, Bloomfield police said.

After police secured the scene, investigators identified a vehicle allegedly used in the shootings, which turned out to be stolen, authorities said.

With help from neighboring departments, Bloomfield police arrested Byrd on Tuesday, authorities said.
