BLOOMFIELD, NJ — The following news release comes courtesy of the Bloomfield Police Department. Find out how to post announcements or events to your local Patch site.
The Bloomfield Police Department is proud to announce the return of its highly anticipated Police Trading Card “Cop Card” Program, an exciting community initiative now held about every five years. This beloved program, which was previously held in 1996, 1999, 2015, and 2021, encourages local children to collect trading cards featuring members of the police department, with special prizes awarded to those who collect the most cards.
This year’s program includes a heartfelt addition: each trading card will feature the Multiple Myeloma Awareness Ribbon, honoring the courageous fight of Lt. Naomi Zepeda against multiple myeloma, a form of blood cancer. Lt. Zepeda’s resilience and dedication have inspired the department and community alike, and this special feature aims to raise awareness for those affected by the disease.
“The Police Trading Card Program is all about building positive relationships between our officers and the youth in Bloomfield,” said Chief George Ricci. “By including the myeloma awareness ribbon, we hope to educate our community and honor Lt. Zepeda’s strength.”
Highlighting the program’s lasting impact, current Detective Damian Sorrentino and Officer Anthony Bernardo both collected police trading cards as children. Their early connection with the department through this program played a memorable role in inspiring their careers in law enforcement.
The program runs until May 31. Children are encouraged to visit the business sponsors and meet officers to collect their cards. At the end of the program, the Bloomfield elementary school students who have collected the most cards will be awarded special prizes.
