Knitting Enthusiasts In Bloomfield Earn Kudos From Town Council

They’re known as the Bloomfield Stitchers, and they’re turning their love for knitting into a way to make a difference.

BLOOMFIELD, NJ — They’re known as the “Bloomfield Stitchers,” and they’re turning their love for knitting into a way to make a difference.

The Bloomfield Stitchers – a local group of knitting enthusiasts and community advocates – recently earned some well-deserved kudos in the form of a congratulatory proclamation at the township council’s June 8 meeting.

Here’s what earned the stitchers an official thumbs-up from the council (read the full proclamation below):

WHEREAS, the Tuesday Civic Center Crochet and Knitting Group known as the Bloomfield Stitchers has served as a cornerstone of community connection, skill-sharing, and compassionate service for seniors; and

WHEREAS, this dedicated group was the foundational voice that advocated for a dedicated senior facility, directly inspiring the creation of the Oakeside Bloomfield Senior Center; and

WHEREAS, the members have generously handcrafted and donated over 500 essential items-including hats, scarves, headbands, baby blankets, washcloths, and toys-to local organizations; and

WHEREAS, these acts of service have directly supported Toni’s Kitchen, Mountainside Medical Center, First Presbyterian Church at Montclair, Church of the Holy Spirit, Sacred Heart Church, Carteret School, Montclair State University, National Council of Jewish Women, and Bloomfield High School. Many of these programs and services are administered with the help of Joanne Aponte.

WHEREAS, the Bloomfield Stitchers are represented by dedicated members Charlyn Kennedy, Diane Doherty, Donna Lampe, Eileen Colby, Eli Kelly, Glady Soto, Jeanine Brady, Joanne Darke, Kathleen Hamilton, Marianne Kissel, Marlena Adams, Maria Maurieria, Michelle Anderson, Sandy Gallit, Sue Morrocco, Gail Rawcliffe, and Jean Wilson, whose commitment to service, fellowship, and community engagement exemplifies the spirit and mission of the organization;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, JENNY MUNDELL, Mayor of the Township of Bloomfield, along with the members of the Township Council, hereby recognize and celebrate the Tuesday Civic Center Crochet and Knitting Group known as the Bloomfield Stitchers for their extraordinary community impact. We invite all seniors who possess basic knitting or crocheting skills to join this welcoming group every Tuesday from 1:15 PM to 3:00 PM at the Civic Center to continue their mission of charity and fellowship.
