Cathedral Parish Joins National Demonstrations for Justice and Compassion

This past weekend, Presiding Bishop George R. Lucey, FCM, together with the clergy and People of God of the Cathedral parish of St. Francis of Assisi( www.stfrancisnj.org), stood shoulder to shoulder with community members in a peaceful public demonstration against what Bishop Lucey described as “the oppressive and ill-considered foreign and domestic policies” of the current federal administration.

The witness was part of a broader national movement, with clergy from American National Catholic Church (ANCC) communities across the country joining in local demonstrations to speak prophetically against injustice, in solidarity with the vulnerable and marginalized.

“As followers of Christ and ministers of His Gospel, we cannot remain silent when the policies of our government harm the least among us, estrange the immigrant, ignore the cries of the poor, or pursue violence under the guise of security,” Bishop Lucey said. “To stand with the people today is to stand with Christ.”

Signs bearing messages of peace, equity, and compassion lined the streets. Together, participants prayed publicly for wisdom and a conversion of heart in national leadership, bearing faithful witness to the Gospel imperative to “act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with our God.”

From New Jersey to New Mexico, ANCC clergy joined in prayerful protest, offering a unified call for compassion, justice, and Gospel-centered policy.

“These moments call us not to despair,” Bishop Lucey added, “but to deeper discipleship — to be a Church not confined to Sunday mornings, but present and incarnate in the world where suffering, injustice, and grace collide.”

The Cathedral’s participation was coordinated with local faith-based coalitions and justice-seeking neighbors of all backgrounds.

“We do not do this as partisans, but as prophets; not as agitators, but as agents of Christ’s peace,” Bishop Lucey concluded. “Our hearts, our prayers, and our hands remain committed to the building of God’s Reign — even, and especially, in difficult times.”
