Bat Waving, Shirtless, Screaming Man Arrested In Bloomfield

Police say the 24-year-old had damaged several parked cars when officers arrived on the scene.

Police arrested a shirtless, obscenity-screaming, bat-waving Bloomfield man after he allegedly damaged several parked cars on Sunday morning.

The incident took place around 1:19 a.m. when two Bloomfield police officers arrived in the area of Bloomfield Avenue and Edison Street to find Jeovanii Mejias, 24, holding a baseball bat and screaming obscenities in the street.

After officers made “numerous verbal attempts” for Mejias to drop the bat, he “forcefully threw the bat away” and continued to disobey the officer’s request to stop, police reported.

The officers eventually had to physically restrain Mejias in order to place him under arrest.

Police charged Mejias with obstructing the administration of law, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, criminal mischief and resisting arrest.

Mejias was taken to the Essex County Correctional Facility. His bail set at $25,000 with a 10 percent cash option.
