Bloomfield 2023 Primary Election: Candidates, Races, Voter Info Event
The primary election is getting closer, and Bloomfield voters will have several candidates to choose from on their ballots. See the list.

BLOOMFIELD, NJ — The 2023 primary election is getting closer, and Bloomfield voters will have several candidates to choose from on their ballots – although not all of the races will be contested.
On June 6, Bloomfield residents will head to the polling place to take part in this year’s primary election. The winners will face off in November in the general election.

TOWN COUNCIL – Jenny Mundell (Ward 1), Nicholas Joanow (Ward 2) and Sarah Cruz (Ward 3) are running unopposed for the Democratic Party nomination. No Republicans filed to run in the primary election. Terms on the Bloomfield Township Council last for three years.
34TH DISTRICT (SENATE) – Britnee Timberlake is running unopposed for the Democratic Party nomination for state senate in the 34th Legislative District, which includes Bloomfield. No Republicans filed to run.

34TH DISTRICT (ASSEMBLY) – Bloomfield Mayor Michael Venezia and Carmen Morales are running unopposed for the Democratic Party nomination in the 34th Legislative District state assembly race. ESSEX COUNTY COMMISSIONERS (AT-LARGE) – There are four at-large seats up for grabs on the board of commissioners this year. Four Democratic Party incumbents have filed to run for re-election: Brendan Gill, Romaine Graham, Patricia Sebold and Wayne Richardson. They will face a challenge in the primary election from newcomer Justin Harris. Meanwhile, four Republican candidates have filed to run for at-large seats on the commissioner board: Joseph Cifelli, Alexandra Campisi, Aristotle Popolizio and Michael Pocelinko. ESSEX COUNTY COMMISSIONER (DISTRICT 5) – Incumbent Carlos Pomares is running unopposed for the Democratic Party nomination in District 5, which includes Bloomfield. Kristen Bloschak is running unopposed for the Republican Party nomination.
COUNTY SURROGATE – Two people have filed to run for a five-year term as surrogate in the 2023 primary election. Alturrick Kenny is running unopposed for the Democratic Party nomination. Peter Russo is running unopposed for the Republican Party nomination.

BLOOMFIELD VOTER INFO SESSION
The Bloomfield Commission on Civil Rights will hold a voter information session on Wednesday, May 3 at 7 p.m. via Zoom.
The public workshop will include a discussion on voting; personnel will be available to answer any questions participants may have about the 2023 election. Register online for the meeting here. The meeting ID is 850 5153 3426 and the password is 987443.
According to the Bloomfield Commission on Civil Rights, here are some key dates that local voters should keep in mind:
- Tuesday, May 16 is the last day to register to vote or to transfer voter registration for the PRIMARY election (Municipal Clerk’s Office, Room 214, Town Hall, is open 8:30 AM - 9:00 PM).
- Tuesday, May 30 is the last day to apply for a vote-by-mail ballot for the GENERAL election.
- Tuesday, June 6 is PRIMARY ELECTION Day. Polls will be open from 6:00 AM - 8:00 PM
- Early Voting will be held on June 2 and 3 from 10:00 AM - 8:00 PM, and June 4 from 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM at the Watsessing Park Community Center located at 38 Conger Street
- Please note, there will be no in-person voting on Monday, June 5
“I encourage all residents to join us for our upcoming virtual voter information session to learn everything you need to know about casting your ballot in the upcoming election,” Bloomfield Councilwoman Wartyna Davis said.
“Empower yourself with knowledge and make your vote count,” agreed Djanna Hill, chair of the Bloomfield Commission on Civil Rights. “Our voter information session will provide you with the accurate information you need about the voting process so you can be fully informed on Election Day.”
