Two downtown Bloomfield businesses are doing what they can to help the community during the COVID-19 crisis. Last week, popular Bloomfield Center eatery Anthony’s dropped off several dozen servings of its delicious cheesecake desserts. The treats were personally delivered to the intensive care unit of Clara Maass Medical Center with a note of thanks from the owners for the staff’s hard work and dedication during this pandemic.

A Bloomfield Center retailer has also found a great way to support our area’s health care workers and with the help of the community they would like to continue the effort. Store owner Mary Murdoch of J. T. Murdoch Shoes wanted to find a way to be of service during this unprecedented crisis. A few weeks ago, the family-owned business, started accepting cash donations and used the funds to purchase a special brand of clogs popular with workers whose job require them to stand on their feet for prolonged periods (i. e. hospital employees). The store discounts the price by 30% in order to maximize the number of pairs that are purchased and so far, thanks to donations received from local residents, over 90 pairs have been personally delivered to Mountainside Hospital and Clara Maass Medical Center. Mary is surprised and extremely grateful for the response sharing, “We are so happy to have found a way to give back to this group of people who are doing so much for our community. We will continue this effort for the duration as we receive more donations.” Anyone interested in contributing should contact the store directly and speak with Mary.

Bloomfield Center Alliance Executive Director Ollyn J. Lettman comments, “J. T. Murdoch Shoes is a great example of how a small business must adapt to any situation in order to remain relevant. In this case, Mary and her staff are filling an important need and connecting with the community. We hope folks will make it a point to remember and support these and other small businesses during this challenging time.”

The Bloomfield Center Alliance (BCA) manages the township’s downtown district and has created a listing of businesses that are currently open. To see it and learn more about Bloomfield Center, please go to www.bloomfieldcenter.com or visit BCA’s Facebook Page.
