Deacons Take Post University

Rookie guard Matthew Hall (Brooklyn, N.J.) headlined a quartet of Bloomfield players to reach double-figures in scoring with 18 points Thursday night, as the men's basketball team improved to 5-5 overall and 2-1 in conference play with an 80-69 home victory over CACC North Division rival Post University after an earlier win (Dominican College, 12/6) and loss (Caldwell College, 12/3) over the past week.

The Deacons got off to a fast start early, jumping out to a 14-6 advantage through the first five minutes of the contest.  A second Bloomfield spurt came midway through the opening half, with the Deacons ripping off a 13-0 spurt to take a commanding 36-18 lead with 8:21 to play in the period.  Post would weather the early barrage and chip away at the Bloomfield cushion, cutting the deficit to seven points at 41-34 heading into the intermission.

The Eagles would cut the lead to four on two separate occasions in the second half's first minutes, but it would prove to be the closest the visitors would come to overtaking the Deacons.  Bloomfield would engineer a decisive 11-0 run over a four-minute span to put the game out of reach and send the lead back to double-digits, cruising the rest of the way to pick up their second-straight conference victory to get back to .500 overall on the season.

Hall's 18 points led the Bloomfield scoring attack, while sophomore Kevin Udo (West Orange, N.J.) totaled 16 points and nine rebounds to key the frontcourt effort in the victory.  Senior point guard Ahmad Harris (Linden, N.J.) tallied 10 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and four steals in a trademark performance, while Terry Hicks (Neptune, N.J.) notched 15 points to round out the double-figure scorers.  Rookie guard Marvin Williams (Jersey City, N.J.) continued his solid play with nine points and six rebounds on the evening.

Bloomfield Deacons return to action Saturday, December 10 when they travel to CACC South Division rival Wilmington University.  Tip-off for the contest is scheduled for 3:00 PM.

Lady Deacons Follow Suit

Five players scored at least eight points and the Bloomfield defense returned to form Thursday night after losses to Caldwell College and Dominican College earlier in the week, as the women's basketball team improved to 2-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play with a 73-45 home victory over CACC North Division rival Post University.

The Lady Deacons defense was on display from the contest's opening tip, as Bloomfield was able to stifle the Eagles with their trademark full-court press and hold Post scoreless over the first six minutes of the contest.  The home team was able to storm out to a 26-6 advantage over the first 11 minutes of the contest, forcing 15 Post turnovers and holding the Eagles to just 17% shooting in the opening half.

Bloomfield would maintain the double-digit advantage throughout the remainder of the contest, taking a commanding 40-20 lead into the intermission.  The lead would balloon to as much as 30 over the course of the second frame, with the Eagles proving unable to mount a late-game comeback effort.  The Lady Deacons cruised the rest of the way, snapping a two-game conference losing streak and picking up their first CACC victory of the young campaign in dominant fashion.

Sophomore guard Ivettlis Castro (Carteret, N.J.) led the offensive effort with 15 points, three assists and a pair of steals, while forward Lauren Deverin (Sewaren, N.J.) notched a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds in an outstanding effort off the bench.  Emily Hall (Montclair, N.J.) and Tierra Scott (Bear, De.) each totaled nine points in the win, while Jamila Garrett (Egg Harbor, N.J.) totaled a season-high eight points and nine rebounds in reserve.

The Lady Deacons return to action Saturday, December 10 when they travel to CACC South Division rival Wilmington University.  Tip-off for the contest is set for 1:00 PM.
