BLOOMFIELD, NJ — Bloomfield police have arrested a man who allegedly burglarized the Subway sandwich shop at 121 Bloomfield Avenue earlier this month, authorities say.

According to the Bloomfield Police Department, Jason Henriques, 23, of Newark, has been charged with burglary and theft in connection with the March 8 burglary.

Police say that the incident took place during the early morning hours. Surveillance footage captured an image of a “lone male actor” entering the building from an unlocked rear door. Once inside, the suspect caused more than $20,000 dollars in damages.

During the burglary, the suspect removed cash from a register and a safe in the store, then fled on foot, using a “construction-type rolling container” to transport the safe and flee the area, authorities said.

Detectives later recovered security camera footage from numerous residences and businesses, and spoke to multiple residents that said they observed a person flee towards the direction of Newark.

Bloomfield detectives later determined that the suspect lived on North 5th Street in Newark, learning his alleged first name – “Jason” – after showing witnesses in the area the surveillance photos, authorities said. Detectives then matched a photo of a North 5th Street resident to the surveillance photos they had recovered.

On Tuesday morning, Bloomfield police set up surveillance in the area of North 5th Street and took a man later identified as Jason Henriques into custody.

Police soon recovered the alleged stolen safe inside a nearby abandoned house, authorities stated.

Authorities charged Henriques with burglary and theft and transported him to the Essex County Correctional Facility with a no-bail option.

Bloomfield Police Director Samuel DeMaio thanked the detectives and residents of Bloomfield and Newark for the cooperation that ultimately led to the arrest.
