Bloomfield Cops Chase Wheelie-Popping Motorcyclist

The Essex County man was arrested after a brief struggle on Arlington Avenue.

Bloomfield police arrested a wheelie-popping motorcyclist after he led officers on a short chase down Arlington Avenue on Aug. 11.

Police first attempted to stop Jose Perez, 53, of Newark, at the intersection of Bloomfield Avenue and Watsessing Avenue at 6:38 p.m.

At that time, Perez sped away on his 2003 Susuki motorcycle and crossed over into oncoming traffic in an attempt to give officers the slip, at one point pulling a wheelie and losing his helmet, police stated.

The chase ended around Arlington Avenue and Hoffman Boulevard, with Perez reportedly resisting arrest and putting up a “brief struggle.”

Neither Perez or the arresting officers were injured, police stated.

Perez was charged with eluding, resisting arrest, speeding in a school zone, failure to signal, improper passing, driving without a license, reckless driving, improper turn and failure to use proper equipment (helmet).

His bail was set at $30,000 with a 10 percent cash option.
