BLOOMFIELD, NJ — Bloomfield police are warning local residents about a recently reported “diversionary burglary” that took place in the township’s northern end.
According to a BPD advisory issued on Tuesday, police received a report that two males – about 30 and 50-years-old – allegedly entered a home after claiming to be from the water department. One of the suspects allegedly “went to run the water” inside the home while the other walked through the house and burglarized it, police said.

“Please spread the word to elderly neighbors and friends,” Bloomfield police stated. “They are usually the target of diversionary burglaries. Unless you have a scheduled appointment with a specific company or department, never let anyone in to your house. If you have any suspicions, call our dispatch center at (973) 680-4141. We will gladly send an officer to verify that the company is who they say they are.”
