BLOOMFIELD, NJ — Bloomfield police charged a Springfield man with driving while intoxicated after he flipped his car in a collision at the intersection of JFK Drive and Dodd Street earlier this month, authorities say.
According to the Bloomfield Police Department, officers responded to the area around 10:21 p.m. on Aug. 9 on a report of a motor vehicle crash. On arrival, the officers saw two cars, one of which was overturned.
Emergency responders removed the driver of the overturned vehicle – Stephen Thomas, 51, of Springfield – who was “coherent and able to speak with an officer,” police said.

During an interview with Thomas, the officer allegedly noticed the smell of alcohol on Thomas’ breath, authorities said. Police later charged Thomas with DWI, reckless driving and assault by auto. He was released on his own recognizance after being treated at a local hospital.
The three occupants of the second car involved in the crash were treated for minor injuries at the scene, authorities stated.
