Bloomfield DPW Nor'easter-Ready

Snow is falling in Bloomfield – and Department of Public Works trucks are ready to get to work, if need be.

In anticipation of Winter Storm Athena, the nor'easter that will move through our region Wednesday into Thursday bringing snow, rain and some wind gusts, DPW trucks have been readied with plows and loads of salt, according to Fred Menzel, director of the town's Office of Emergency Management.

"We hope this (nor'easter) doesn't amount to much," said Menzel.

Snow is forecasted before midnight in Bloomfield, with temperatures in the mid-30s and wind gusts as high as 44 mph, according to the National Weather Service. Snow will mix with rain overnight, with gusts as high as nearly 50 mph.

As of Wednesday morning, 5,700 PSE&G customers in Bloomfield are still without power and it could be another three to four days until electricity is restored, Menzel said. PSE&G has been working to restore 1,100 to 1,200 customers in town a day and have estimated that by Sunday the entire town will be back up.

The township's non-emergency number, 973-680-4177, is still open for residents with questions or concerns.

The school board meeting scheduled for Wednesday night has been postponed until Nov. 13, Business Administrator Michael Derderian said in an email.

Bloomfield College will close for evening classes at 6 p.m. Wednesday and will reopen Thursday at 8 a.m. for classes and 8:30 a.m. for employees, according to the school's website.
