BLOOMFIELD, NJ — A new fire engine for the Bloomfield Fire Department will also mean a boost for a municipality in the Dominican Republic, officials say.

Recently, Bloomfield Township purchased a 2019 E-One Typhoon E-Max Rescue Pumper engine, which will be put to use in local emergencies, as well as for aid calls to neighboring towns.

Director of Public Safety Samuel DeMaio said the new truck is “an investment in public safety.”

With the arrival of the new engine, the BFD will also be donating one of its older trucks – a 2002 American LaFrance engine – to La Vega, a 20 square mile municipality in the Dominican Republic with 250,000 residents and more than 77,000 buildings to safeguard.

“We’re very excited to add this new rescue pumper to our fleet,” Fire Chief Louis Venezia said. “It’s a great addition to our department. Having reliable equipment is very important so we can provide a high level of service to the residents and businesses of Bloomfield.”

Venezia said the department was also proud to donate its old fire engine to their peers in the Dominican Republic.

“We’re glad to help them provide fire protection to their community,” he said.
