Bloomfield Gears Up For Major Repairs At Montgomery Street Bridge

Temporary traffic shifts will take place during repairs at the Bloomfield bridge. The work is expected to last "through most of 2019."

BLOOMFIELD, NJ — As the start date for repairs at the Montgomery Street bridge in Bloomfield approaches this month, representatives from the New Jersey Turnpike Authority have been reaching out to local residents who may be impacted by the major construction project.

Turnpike Authority officials began in-person outreach to Bloomfield residents and business owners on Wednesday. Information pamphlets have also been mailed to the surrounding neighborhood, according to a municipal news release.

Bloomfield officials stated:

“The NJTA is closing the Montgomery Street bridge for repairs beginning later this month and continuing through most of 2019. NJTA has set up a 24/7 hotline for residents to call with questions: 800-374-5137, and residents can receive weekly text or email updates. Questions can be emailed to info@gspexit145.com.”

According to the NJTA website, the Montgomery Street bridge repair will include:

  • Reconstruction of deck, sidewalks, parapets and lighting
  • Roadway milling and resurfacing of Montgomery Street at both bridge approaches
  • Sidewalk, curb, handicap ramp and traffic striping of Montgomery Street

“Temporary traffic shifts will be utilized to facilitate the work,” the NJTA stated.

NJTA officials wrote:

  • “During the week of 1/21/19, temporary roadway widening work will begin on the Montgomery Street bridge in advance of staged construction. Work will be supported by Bloomfield Police.”
  • “During the week of 1/28/19, westbound Montgomery Street at JFK Drive North will be detoured to Liberty Street to accommodate bridge deck reconstruction on the bridge over the Garden State Parkway. Work will be supported by Bloomfield Police.”
