Bloomfield To Give Away Free ‘Emergency Bags’ To Senior Citizens

BLOOMFIELD, NJ — When disaster strikes, will you have your emergency bag ready, Bloomfield?
On Thursday, the Bloomfield Department of Health and Human Services announced that it will be giving away “emergency ready go-bags” for local senior citizens (55+). The bags will include a manual can opener, first aid kit, flash lights, reusable water bottles, FEMA brochures and instructions, file for life magnets and local emergency numbers.

According to FEMA, other useful items for a general emergency kit might include:
- Prescription medications and glasses
- Infant formula and diapers
- Pet food and extra water for your pet
- Important family documents such as copies of insurance policies,
- Identification and bank account records in a waterproof, portable container
- Cash or traveler’s checks and change
- Emergency reference material such as a first aid book or information
- A sleeping bag or warm blanket for each person.
- A complete change of clothing including a long sleeved shirt, long pants and sturdy shoes.
- Household chlorine bleach and medicine dropper
- Fire extinguisher
- Matches in a waterproof container
- Feminine supplies and personal hygiene items
- Mess kits, paper cups, plates and plastic utensils, paper towels
- Paper and pencil
- Books, games, puzzles or other activities for children
