Bloomfield High’s Patricia Carter Retiring After 47 Years

"Everyone who had the pleasure to work with her will miss her ever-present smile and her dignified personality."

BLOOMFIELD, NJ — “47 years at Bloomfield High School… that’s got to be a record.” So read the Bloomfield Public School District’s Twitter post last week as administrators announced the retirement of longtime staff member Patricia Carter.

Almost 200 staff members from Bloomfield High School celebrated Carter’s retirement on Nov. 30 at the Chandelier in Belleville. Carter will officially retire on Dec.31 after serving the district for 47 years, school administrators told Patch.

Carter is a 1949 graduate of Bloomfield High School and was a member of the prestigious archery team under legendary coach Edith Russell. It was while practicing archery at Foley Field that Carter met her husband, who was at Foley while practicing with the Seton Hall University track team, administrators said.

Carter’s six children all graduated from Bloomfield High School, as did six of her 22 grandchildren, with two more current BHS students. In addition, her son Michael is a teacher at BHS and has been the head football coach for the past 26 years.

Bloomfield administrators had kind words for Carter:

“During Carter’s tenure at BHS she witnessed the transformation of the computer age during the administration of nine different United States presidents, but the one constant has been Mrs. Carter’s dedication to the students of Bloomfield High School. Everyone who had the pleasure to work with her will miss her ever-present smile and her dignified personality.”
