Bloomfield Man Charged With DUI After Crash, Had Daughter In Car: Police

Bloomfield police charged a local man with DUI after he allegedly ran a stoplight and crashed his car into a telephone pole.

BLOOMFIELD, NJ — Bloomfield police charged a local man with DUI after he allegedly ran a stoplight and crashed his car into a telephone pole with his three-year-old daughter in the car.

According to the Bloomfield Police Department, several witnesses reported seeing Martin Scirica, 54, of Bloomfield, drive his car north on Broad Street around 8:27 p.m. on June 6, proceed through a red light and hit a telephone pole.

Scirica’s three-year-old daughter was in the car at the time of the crash, authorities said.

Neither Scirica or his daughter suffered serious injury, although emergency responders transported the three-year-old to Clara Maass Medical Center for a minor head injury.

Officers allegedly smelled alcohol on Scirica’s breath and conducted multiple field sobriety tests, which he reportedly failed. Emergency responders then transported Scirica to Mountainside Hospital for further evaluation, authorities stated.

The child’s mother was notified and responded to the hospital, police said.

Officers located an empty bottle of vodka inside the vehicle during the encounter, police said.

Authorities charged Scirica with DUI, Reckless Driving, Open Container of Alcohol, Failure to Observe a Traffic Device, Failure to Use Child Seat for Under 8 Years Old and Failure to Wear a Seatbelt, and notified the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit about the incident.
