Bloomfield School Evacuated After Bomb Threat, Later Deemed Safe

Bloomfield Principal: "Police searched the entire school and deemed the building safe."

BLOOMFIELD, NJ -- Authorities evacuated an elementary school in Bloomfield after a bomb threat on Tuesday. The building was eventually deemed safe after a police search, authorities said.

Mike Sullivan, the principal at Demarest School, released a letter to the community about the incident. He wrote:

"At approximately 2:21 p.m., I received information that there was a potential bomb threat directed towards Demarest School. Immediately upon receiving this threat, I contacted the Bloomfield Police Department and evacuated the building out of an abundance of caution. Bloomfield police acted immediately and identified the suspected caller. School administrators and the Bloomfield police worked together to ensure that there was no threat to anyone or the school at any time."

"Police searched the entire school and deemed the building safe," Sullivan wrote.

"Once this determination was made, the students and staff reentered the building and took part in dismissal," the principal added. "Thank you for understanding that the safety and well-being of your children is my utmost priority. I want to thank the teachers and the students. I am proud that they did an incredible job evacuating the building quickly and safely, while staying calm under stressful circumstances."

"If you have any specific concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me," Sullivan wrote.
