Start Your Engines Right!

Holistic Health Coach Eve J. Cannon shares her best advice on how to make the most out of your mornings even when you're not a morning person!

I've never been a morning person. Naturally a night owl, "Early to bed, early to rise" was not a part of my vocabulary. In the past getting up early made me want to cry, but in the last few years, I've made some changes to make rising earlier a little bit easier. By adopting small morning rituals, I actually look forward to most mornings these days.

Your morning rituals should be small habits that make you feel good and are easy to do when you first wake up. I wouldn't recommend catching up on biochemistry! Think of little things that will energize you so you feel like you started out your day taking good care of yourself. That uplifted energy will carry you through your day in a much more positive way than what I used to do, which was drag myself out of bed, whine a little, and get to work. Blahhhh.

The difficult part of this is you actually have to get up slightly earlier to make time for your morning rituals. Once you adjust to your new routine, I promise you will be proud of yourself, and you'll start your days on the right foot more often than not!

Here are some of my favorite morning rituals. I invite you to try these and encourage you to get creative with your own.

  • Drink a glass of water. Rather than starting your day hyped up on caffeine and sugar, put the flow of a clean glass of water into your body.
  • Stretch. Start your blood circulating in a gentle way rather than rushing to the car in fight-or-flight mode. Be mindful of your physical body and take a moment to thank it for carrying you through your days.
  • Make time for breakfast. Most of us shove something in our mouths as we're driving or sitting at our desks. Take a few minutes to simply focus on eating. Not only do your food choices set your thermostat for the day, but eating in a relaxed state allows your digestive system to do its job more easily.
  • Journal. Write your thoughts for the day, anything you want to get off your mind, dreams from the night before (my personal fave), your intentions, or daily gratitudes.
