Carjacking In Bloomfield Woman’s Driveway; Cops Make Arrest

BLOOMFIELD, NJ — Police have arrested one of the accused suspects in a carjacking that took place in Bloomfield last week, authorities announced Monday.

According to the Bloomfield Police Department, officers responded to a Fontaine Avenue home at 6:43 p.m. on Jan. 23 after receiving a report about a carjacking.

The victim said she parked her vehicle, a grey Toyota RAV4, in the driveway. When she got out of the car, four people walked towards her. One approached her from behind and demanded she hand over all her belongings, then grabbed her keys, police said.

The four suspects then got into the victim’s car and fled the scene, police stated.

Authorities entered the RAV4 as NCIC stolen and a felony vehicle.

Bloomfield detectives managed to track the victim’s cell phone to the area of Route 280 in East Orange before losing the signal. After reviewing video surveillance of the incident, police identified one of the suspects as Naszir Mitchell, 20, of Hillside, and disseminated the information statewide.

Police arrested Mitchell on Jan. 26. He was charged with 1st degree carjacking; 2nd degree robbery; 1st degree conspiracy to commit carjacking and 2nd degree conspiracy to commit robbery.

Mitchell was transported to the Essex County Correctional Facility in Newark.

Bloomfield Public Safety Director Samuel DeMaio thanked the Newark Police Department for assisting local detectives with their investigation.

No additional information, including the status of the other three suspects, was immediately available.
