Essex County Has Most Pending Immigration Cases In NJ: Report

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — New Jersey has a long history of immigrants coming to the Garden State in search of a better life for themselves and their families. And according to recent reports, the Essex County area may have some of the most immigrants in the state.

A survey by NJ101.5 recently mapped out the percentages and numbers of immigrants in each New Jersey town, basing their data on U.S. Census estimates. According to the report, the largest concentrations of immigrant populations are located in the Newark and East Orange area.

Newark has 81,187 immigrants living in the city, about 29 percent of its population.

With 4,950 pending cases, Essex County outpaces the next-highest county, Union, which has 4,122 pending cases, according to data from the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse at Syracuse University.

A 2016 NJ Spotlight report stated that about 29,500 of 800,000 residents are foreign-born, including more than a third of Belleville’s residents.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) maintains a field office in Newark.
