Essex County Taxi Driver Robbed At Knifepoint: Cops

An Essex County man is accused of robbing a taxi driver from Newark in Bloomfield after being picked up in Nutley, police say.

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — A 28-year-old man was recently accused of robbing a driver with a Newark-based taxi service at knifepoint near Llewellyn Avenue in Bloomfield after being picked up in Nutley, police say.

According to the Bloomfield Police Department, the robbery took place on Christmas morning after the driver stopped on Centre Street in Nutley to pick up Jay Murphy, a homeless man with roots in Bloomfield.

At some point during the ride, Murphy allegedly ordered the driver to pull over on Llewellyn Avenue and hand over his money, police said. The victim wasn’t harmed and immediately called Bloomfield officers to report the incident.

Bloomfield police arrested Murphy and charged him with robbery, authorities said.
