Come to talk/slide show on Morris Canal

Back in the 1830s, Bloomfield was a major stop along the 90-mile Morris Canal, a working waterway that extended from Newark to Phillipsburg. From the shoreline, work crews and mule teams pulled boats laden with goods, a five-day journey from end to end.

Bloomfield was a critical stop because its lock and long inclined plane pulled boats up the hill, or lowered them, in massive wooden cradles along rails that spanned the incline.

Local historian Rich Rockwell will bring those days of hard labor and exhilarating progress to life in “The Morris Canal in Bloomfield,” a talk and slide show hosted by the Historical Society of Bloomfield.
