Fire At Bloomfield Building; 1 Firefighter Taken To Hospital (UPDATED)

A Bloomfield firefighter was taken to the hospital for heat exhaustion. No other injuries were reported, authorities said.

BLOOMFIELD, NJ — A fire took place at a commercial building in Bloomfield on Monday morning, authorities said. A firefighter was taken to the hospital to be treated for heat exhaustion, but there were no other reported injuries.

According to Fire Chief Lou Venezia, firefighters responded to 582 Bloomfield Avenue around 8 a.m. to find smoke coming from the roof of the three-story building, which contains five stores on the first floor and office suites on the second and third floors.

The fire broke out in Crown Fried Chicken. It is not being considered suspicious, and is accidental in nature, he said.

The fire damage was contained to the store of origin. The blaze was put under control after about 90 minutes, and all units cleared the scene around noon.

Bloomfield firefighters received mutual aid from their peers in Belleville, Nutley, Clifton, East Orange and West Orange. EMS crews from Bloomfield and Verona were also at the scene.

Venezia said he was "proud of how hard firefighters worked at the scene," especially considering the heat and humidity.

The fire impacted traffic on Bloomfield Avenue and Broad Street in all directions, according to the Bloomfield Police Department.
