Hollywood's Summer of Doom and Wolverine Review

This summer Hollywood is headed for disaster with all it's blockbusters doing so poorly. So far the film business is 20% down from this time last year. One reason I think is the high price of tickets now with the special theaters showing 3-D and special I-max super stereo sound so more people are staying home. As my late father used to say, "Don't patronize them and you'll see prices come down"  and that's when prices were cheap as compared to today and we thought they were expensive then. Everything's relative I guess.

Well just when it looked like the summer of doom for a string of failed blockbusters that was languishing, along comes a blockbuster worth seeing and cheering  for,The Wolverine. For those of you not familiar with the Wolverine, he is a Marvel comic mutant super hero named Logan who is a loner who has anger management issues as he tries to deal with himself. He's also immortal and can heal himself when stabbed or scratched which happens quite frequently to him. He's got steel blades all through his body and can shoot out long sharp knife like blades from his kuckles he uses to fight off evildoers. He is a favorite among super hero fans and several movies have been made about him along with the other X-Men series of movies. Hugh Jackman plays The Wolverine and has said he enjoys playing this role. He said he had  to go on a special strict high protein low carbohydrate diet and intense work-outs in order to bulk up for the role.

This episode has Jackman receiving an in person invitation from a lovely young Japanesae girl whose very proficient in the martial arts to visit an old friend dying in Japan whose life he saved  during the Atom bomb in Nagasaki. The old man is now a rich industrialist who wants to buy  Wolverine's immortality while his granddaughter who stands to inherit her grandfather's  business goes on the run with kidnappers who want the old man's fortune. The wolverine becomes embroiled in a conflict forcing him to confront his own demons.

There is lots of action and fight sequences for Jackman to use his famous steel claws with and  a super fight sequence (though extremely far fetched, but hat's what makes these scenes exciting) on top of a high-speed Japanese bullet train going 300 mph that is like a syringe full of adrenalin. Adding evil sexiness to the movie and complication to Wolverine's life is the sexy mutant villainess known as Viper with her own set of powers and a serpant like tongue to put her minons under her power. She readily appeals to most guys as she slinks and slithers her way through this epic in various skin tight vinyl outfits and long flowing blonde locks as she doles out her evil. There is great character development, lots of detail about Japanese culture and tons of action sequences featuring martial arts and saber slashing. So far this is at least one really good movie blockbuster in the summer of doom for blockbusters. Check out the trailer below.
