House Fire In Bloomfield Burns Resident, Leaves Home Uninhabitable

BLOOMFIELD, NJ — Bloomfield firefighters battled a blaze that injured a resident and left a home on Broad Street uninhabitable on Wednesday morning, authorities say.

Authorities said the fire took place around 1 a.m. on the 800-block of Broad Street. Firefighters arrived to find flames coming from the second floor of the home with extension into the attic space.

One person was home at the time, but self-evacuated before fire crews arrived. They were taken to Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston and treated for a minor burn injury, authorities said.

The fire remains under investigation but is believed to be accidental in nature, Fire Chief Lou Venezia said.

The Belleville and Nutley fire departments provided aid, and Bloomfield police, Bloomfield EMS, and PSE&G also assisted at the scene.

“I want to commend our firefighters for their response under challenging conditions,” Venezia said. “Their aggressive interior attack and coordinated efforts with our automatic-aid partners from Belleville and Nutley limited the fire’s spread and protected neighboring properties.”
