Karaoke Night at Pianos

Music at Pianos Bar & Grill brings together a diverse cross-section of Bloomfield.

Walking in the front door of Piano’s Bar & Grill on a Thursday will place you dead center in the middle of the stage in the barroom.

A scary place to be.

If, by chance, someone named “Lexi” has already taken the mic and started singing a soul-stirring rendition of “How Come U Don’t Call Me” by Alicia Keys (by way of Prince) you can count yourself as lucky. If that same “Lexi” finishes her song, thanks the crowd and rushes over to take your drink order you know it’s karaoke night at Pianos.

Presented by Image Karaoke, the fun at l started out with “Gillian” belting out a soulful version of “Black Horse and the Cherry Tree” by KT Tunstall, followed by “Tommy” singing his version of “Mack the Knife,” showing off his best Frank Sinatra.

After the first few vocalists, things might have looked pretty intimidating for the casual performer. But like every amateur night, it just takes that one drunken, off-key performance to turn everything around.

A group of three friends decided to test their talent with “You Make Me Feel Brand New” by the Stylistics. They weren’t afraid to take on the vocal prowess of the 70s R&B group that originated the song. Nor were they daunted by the falsetto chorus which the song calls for.

They should have been.

As the night wore on, more and more of the bar crowd decided to take the stage and put their talents on display.

One participant, Rajiv Fernando couldn’t convince his companion Zulfia Pathan to join him at the mic.

“I had a good time. Everybody seems to be having a lot of fun here,” said Fernando.

Pathan agreed, “Yeah, I had no idea this place had karaoke.”

Later in the evening, groups of men hung on to each other while struggling through “Buffalo Soldier” by Bob Marley.

Karaoke will be at Pianos Bar & Grill every Thursday from 8:30 p.m. to midnight.
