Local Law Firms Gather For Softball in Brookdale Park

Tournament raises money for the Greater Newark Fresh Air Fund.

Eleven softball teams made up of various law firms from Essex, Bergen, and Morris counties, as well as Prudential, gathered at Brookdale Park in Bloomfield on Tuesday afternoon to compete in the 25th annual Battle of the Barristers.

The tournament was all for a good cause, as money was raised for the Greater Newark Fresh Air Fund, which helps provide financial support for inner-city kids going to summer camp.

Despite the humid weather, hundreds of teammates and families came out to show their support, from fellow spouses to federal and state judges who served as base umpires.

"It's a nice day," said Kevin Flynn, 42, of Sills, Cummis & Gross PC. "It could be a little cooler but it's going alright."

Karim Kasper, committee chairman for the event and representing Lowenstein Sandler, was very pleased with the turnout. "Great day, great event, great turnout by everybody: players, teams, judges…" he said.

Kasper said that this year's goal was to raise over $100,000 in donations.

The tournament wrapped up later that evening in Montclair with a special championship game held at Yogi Berra Stadium, home of the New Jersey Jackals.
