Mina Cho Jazz Quartet Recital "May Spirit"

The Mina Cho Quartet, a highly acclaimed Boston based jazz group, comes back for their annual NJ recital at First United Methodist Church of Montclair on May 23 at 7:30 pm. The quartet, which consists of Shu Odamura--guitar, Sam J. C. Lee--bass, Robin Baytas--drums, and Mina Cho--piano, will perform Mina's originals tunes as well as rearranged standards to celebrate the spirit of May.

Mina Cho is a jazz pianist/composer in the Boston area, whose debut album "Originality" (2010) was highly acclaimed by critics for delivering a bold, gospel-infused program of original tunes with her pan-American perspective. Mina's music also uniquely touches spirituality in jazz by implying her lifetime theme: Music & Spirit.  In addition to her brilliant work as a recording artist, she appears regularly as a church musician and a jazz pianist/composer in the greater Boston area.

"Her philosophical / spiritual emphasis in her music places her in a very special category, and I think she has the potential to be a unique musical voice." - Fred Hersch, World Renown Pianist and Composer, 6-time Grammy Nominee (November, 2013)

"The song she played, tentatively, but with determination, was called Simply Love You." - The New Yorker (March, 2013)

"She is a musician of the first order and can already take her place as a significant player." - DownBeat (January, 2011)

"Mina Cho blends stunning technique and harmonic sophistication on her distinctive debut as a leader. Cho stirs up a rich musical gumbo." - Jazz Times (October, 2010)

"It was a pair of musical revelations that exposed the young woman, who as a child in Korea had the ambition to become a world-famous classical pianist, first to the emotional force of gospel, and then to the beauty and improvisational potential of South American folk music." - The Boston Globe (September, 2010)

Admission will be $15 for adults and $10 for students. For ticket purchase and more information on the concert, please call 973-744-4086 or email fumcmontclair@gmail.com. To learn more about the musician, please visit http://www.minachojazz.com.
