Newark Cops Charge 2 Bloomfield Men With Robberies

Newark police have charged two Bloomfield men with robbery in connection with a pair of recent incidents in the city, authorities say.

BLOOMFIELD, NJ — Newark police have charged two Bloomfield men with robbery in connection with a pair of recent incidents in the city, authorities say.

According to the Newark Department of Public Safety, police responded to Roseville and 3rd avenues in Newark on Sept. 22 on a report of a robbery around 7:35 p.m. The 45-year-old male victim told police that he was robbed of his wallet and other personal items.

Newark officers responded to a second robbery call around 7:47 p.m. in the area of Roseville and 4th avenues. A 29-year-old male victim told officers that he was robbed of his cell phone by two suspects fitting the description of those in the previous robbery, authorities said.

In both incidents, the suspects reportedly fled in a gray 2009 Hyundai Sonata, police said.

After a search regarding the Sonata’s whereabouts, police located two men fitting the descriptions - Christian Crowell, 22, and Kenneth Johnson, 23, both of Bloomfield - in the area of Sussex Avenue and North 6th Street.

While apprehending the two men, officers recovered a loaded .38 caliber handgun observed in the suspect vehicle, police stated.

Authorities charged Crowell with Robbery, Conspiracy, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose and Possession of Prohibited Weapons and Devices.

Authorities charged Johnson with Robbery, Conspiracy, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose, Possession of Prohibited Weapons and Devices and Certain Persons Prohibited from Weapons Possession.
