Rep. Mikie Sherrill Blasts ‘Right-Wing’ Supreme Court Abortion Ruling

"The freedom of women to control their bodies should not hinge on a state line," the congresswoman said.

NEW JERSEY — U.S. Rep. Mikie Sherrill has joined several of her Congressional peers in condemning Friday’s landmark decision on abortion from the U.S. Supreme Court.

The expected decision has become official, with the Supreme Court voting to overturn the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision, which guaranteed the right to an abortion in the United States. Read More: Roe V. Wade Overturned: How Abortion Bans Will Impact New Jersey

It will now be up to states to decide the future of abortion rights within their own borders. In New Jersey, abortion access is protected by state law via the Freedom of Reproductive Choice Act, which Gov. Phil Murphy signed earlier this year.

On Friday – joining several of her Democratic peers – Sherrill condemned what she called a “ring-wing activist” Supreme Court ruling.

“This decision is not conservative, it is radical,” the congresswoman said.

Sherrill continued:

“I had hoped against hope that the decision wouldn’t be as extreme as the leaked draft. The court is rolling back a constitutional right, out of step with the majority of our country and almost 50 years of legal precedent. The freedom of women to control their bodies should not hinge on a state line. Women in Alabama, Texas, and Oklahoma deserve the same rights as women in New Jersey. With the end of Roe, 28 states will likely take action to prohibit abortion entirely; 13 states already have trigger bans in place. Many of those bans contain no exemptions for rape, incest, or the health of the mother. Lives and livelihoods of women across the country are not safe.”

“We are at a crisis moment in our country,” Sherrill said. “I will continue to stand up against government overreach, defend reproductive freedom, and push my colleagues in the Senate to codify Roe.”
