Repairs At Busy Bridge In Bloomfield May Last A Year: Officials

If you take the Montgomery Street Bridge in Bloomfield, you may want to leave some extra travel time… for about a year.

BLOOMFIELD, NJ — If you take the Montgomery Street Bridge in Bloomfield, you may want to leave some extra travel time when you leave the house starting on Monday, Feb. 4… for about a year.

According to the Bloomfield Police Department, due to a major construction project that’s expected to last until the end of 2019, the bridge will be open for eastbound traffic only, starting Feb. 4.

The traffic change is expected to last until workers have completed renovating the bridge deck of the structure, officials said.

“Detour signs are in place for westbound traffic and officers will be on scene directing traffic,” the Bloomfield Police Department stated Wednesday. “The estimated time for the completion of the bridge deck is approximately one year. Expect delays and plan alternate routes for your daily travels.”

Representatives from the New Jersey Turnpike Authority have been reaching out to local residents who may be impacted by the major construction project.

Bloomfield officials previously stated:

"The NJTA is closing the Montgomery Street bridge for repairs beginning later this month and continuing through most of 2019. NJTA has set up a 24/7 hotline for residents to call with questions: 800-374-5137, and residents can receive weekly text or email updates. Questions can be emailed to info@gspexit145.com."

According to the NJTA website, the Montgomery Street bridge repair will include:

  • Reconstruction of deck, sidewalks, parapets and lighting
  • Roadway milling and resurfacing of Montgomery Street at both bridge approaches
  • Sidewalk, curb, handicap ramp and traffic striping of Montgomery Street

"Temporary traffic shifts will be utilized to facilitate the work," the NJTA stated.
