St. Patrick's Day Celebrated in Area Parades

St. Patrick's Day is just around the corner, and all around Bloomfield, parades and celebrations are taking place.

The first parade of the year took place on Saturday, March 3rd.  Though Bloomfield does not have its own parade, Bloomfield resident Elizabeth Dunigan, the daughter of Councilwoman at Large Boyle-Dunigan, was the Queen of the Nutley St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

Then, this weekend, a wave of green swept through West Orange when the town and nearby residents celebrated their 61st Annual St. Patrick's Day Parade.

Groups from all over the state and as far as Boston and Ireland, participated in the roughly two-hour parade that proceeded down Main Street to Our Lady of Lourdes Church.  More than 100 organizations and 25 bands participated.

Finally, on Friday, March 16, members of the Bloomfield community and nearby residents will participate in the 77th Newark St. Patrick’s Day Parade.  Participants include Bloomfield residents Sergeant-at-Arms Terrence J. O’Reilly, Robert Ruane and Patricia Darcy Ruane.  Robert Ruane is a former member of the Bloomfield township council.  

The Newark parade will begin with Grandstand ceremonies at 12:00 pm, followed by the official parade at 1:00 pm.  The parade will commence on Mulberry Street at the Prudential Center and end in front of the Newark Museum and Washington Park.   Along the way it will pass the Gateway Complex, the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, Military Park on Center Street and the St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

2012 marks the event’s 77^th year, making it the oldest St. Patrick’s Day parade in New Jersey.
