BLOOMFIELD, NJ — A thief stole about $5,000 worth of tools from a cargo van parked outside Home Depot in Bloomfield while its owner was inside the store last week, authorities said Thursday.

According to the Bloomfield Police Department, officers responded to the Home Depot on Orange Street on Aug. 10 after getting a report about a theft from a vehicle.

The victim told officers that he parked his vehicle in the lot and entered the store around 8 a.m. When he returned, he saw that the door lock was broken and several tools were gone.

The missing tools included four drills, a sawzall and cordless batteries: a total value of $5,000, police said.

An investigation continues, police said Thursday.
