BLOOMFIELD, NJ — A yoga studio in Bloomfield is getting ready to launch a new series of classes for people with developmental disabilities.

The founders of Iris Yoga at 383 Broad Street said that when they launched their initial sensory series for adults 16-years-old and up, it was a “resounding success.” Now, they’re bringing the classes back for another round starting in mid-April.

The new series of classes will take place at 5 p.m. on Wednesdays (starting April 17) and 10 a.m. on Saturdays (starting April 20). They will continue for eight weeks. Learn more here.

Participants will be able to get a chance to “experience the transformative benefits of yoga in an accessible and supportive environment,” according to Iris Yoga. Classes will be led by experienced instructors, and will incorporate movement and meditative elements tailored to the specific needs and pace of individuals with developmental disabilities.

Clients have the option to self-pay for the classes or utilize their funding through the Department of Developmental Disabilities (DDD), as Iris Yoga is an approved vendor. For those interested in registering, they can visit the Iris Yoga website at www.irisyoganj.com or reach out to info@irisyoganj.com. Individuals utilizing DDD funding are encouraged to email for registration assistance.

“We are delighted to expand our sensory series to accommodate the overwhelming demand and positive feedback we've received from our community,” said Taryn Lagonigro, co-founder of Iris Yoga.

“Our goal is to provide a safe and inclusive space where individuals of all abilities can experience the joys of yoga and cultivate mindfulness,” Lagonigro said. “As a mother to a toddler with Down syndrome, it was important for me to create classes like this for the adult population, where programs like this are lacking.”

The new series of classes is the latest initiative that Iris Yoga has taken towards promoting accessibility, inclusivity and well-being for people with developmental disabilities. In June of 2023, their teacher training program graduates included a young adult with Down syndrome – who now teaches regularly at Iris.
