Young Bloomfield actor pursues his interest in theatre on stage at Westminster Arts Center

Alexander Wolfe performs in Big Fish with 4th Wall Theatre

Eleven year old Bloomfield resident, Alexander Wolfe enjoys performing. The Oak View Elementary 5th grader is a member of his school chorus and the Young People’s Chorus of New York City. Alex has also worked with Gas Lamp Players in Glen Ridge. He is continuing to work in musical theatre, and is now also a member of the cast of 4th Wall Theatre’s upcoming production of Big Fish. The musical, which will run in June at the Westminster Arts Center on the campus of Bloomfield College, is based on the book by Daniel Wallace and the Tim Burton film written by John August (who also wrote the musical with composer/lyricist Andrew Lippa).

Big Fish tells the story of Edward Bloom, a traveling salesman who lives life to its fullest… and then some. Edward has always told incredible, larger-than-life stories, which thrill everyone around him – most of all, his devoted wife Sandra. But their son Will, about to have a child of his own, is determined to find the truth behind his father’s epic tales.

Alex plays Will as a child, and he is thoroughly enjoying working on the production. Wolfe says “I really like having the chance to sing and get into character. As Young Will in Big Fish, I get to play a lot of different emotions. Sometimes I doubt my dad's stories are true, but other times it's easy to get caught up in the really good stories that he tells. In a way, Will is like a lot of kids I know in real life. Everyone loves a good story!"

The musical only lasted three months on Broadway in 2013, however, the creative team didn't let that stop them there. They returned to working on the script, changing up songs and created a smaller version which was first produced in Boston. 4th Wall Artistic Director Kate Swan says, "We were thrilled once this version became available, and we are so excited to bring the New Jersey premiere to audiences. This version allows for the tall tales of Edward Bloom to take center stage without the need for all of the huge sets and projections that created so much of that magic on Broadway. Alex is just terrific in the show."

Alex is joined by Gregory Allen, Laurice Grae-Hauck, Christopher Traina, Kimberley Mesiti, Jodi Maloy, Rich Maloy, Vanessa Robinson, Tom Schopper, Patrick McLaughlin, Ashley Leone, Danny Egan, Jessica Walch and Peter Downing. Of the show Alex notes, "This is the smallest cast I've worked with, so I've gotten to know everyone. Even though I'm the youngest, they all treat me like an actor, not a kid. I learn a lot from them. And Kate makes rehearsals fun!" Wolfe concluded.
