3 Hurt As Freehold Twp. Officer Crashes En Route To Crash: Police

A teenage driver, his passenger and the officer all were treated at a local hospital, police said.

FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP, NJ — A Freehold Township police officer and two teens were injured Wednesday morning in a crash that happened while the officer was responding to another crash, police said.

Freehold Township Officer Kevin Cherney was responding to a crash at Route 537 and Kozloski Road at 8:14 a.m. when he was involved in a collision on Elton Adelphia Road near the entrance to Adelphia Plaza, Freehold Township police said.

Cherney was headed east on Elton Adelphia Road, with his emergency lights and sirens activated, when a 2004 BMW driven by a 17-year-old driver from Manalapan pulled out of the plaza and tried to turn and go west on Elton Adelphia Road, and collided with Cherney's patrol vehicle, police said.

Cherney, the 17-year-old, and a female juvenile passenger from the BMW were taken to CentraState Medical Center for medical evaluation. The road was closed for about 45 minutes while Freehold Township police investigated, police said.

All three were treated and released from the hospital, police said.
