The cause of the fire remains under investigation, police said; the residents were not home at the time.

BRICK, NJ — Five pets were killed but no humans were injured Wednesday when a fire broke out in an apartment in the Primrose Lane townhouse complex, Brick police said.
The five pets — two dogs and three cats — were found inside the townhouse at 94 Primrose Lane after firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze, which was reported at 11:24 a.m. when a passerby noticed smoke coming from the building and called 9-1-1, Brick Police Sgt. James Kelly said.
Herbertsville and Laurelton fire companies and police and EMS responded, and Breton Woods and Pioneer Hose fire companies were called in to assist, Kelly said. Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control within 15 minutes.
