When 78-year-old Elazer Lew suddenly couldn't walk, he was rushed to Ocean University Medical Center. There, vascular surgeon at Ocean University Medical Center, Nicholas Russo, M.D., discovered severe artery blockages in his leg, a complication of diabetes. After an initial surgery, a severe infection led to a below-the-knee amputation. Just as Elazer began rehabilitation, he faced another crisis: a limb-threatening infection in his other foot. Dr. Russo acted quickly with a minimally invasive procedure to restore blood flow, while podiatrist at Ocean University Medical Center, James K. Holmes, D.P.M., treated the infection. Through it all, Elazer’s positive attitude never wavered. After nearly a year of recovery, he is now back home, walking on his own and inspiring everyone around him.
