BRICK, NJ — Substance use and abuse by children and teens is an ongoing concern. The Brick Township Police Department is offering a one-night program for parents to help them recognize the warning signs of substance use by their children.
The program, titled "Hidden in Plain Sight", is an interactive program exclusively for parents, guardians, and adult community members and leaders, Officer Victoria Finelli of the Brick Police Department's Community Policing Unit said.
Students will not be permitted to attend, she said.
The program aims to raise awareness about youth substance use, risky behaviors, and addiction and give adults with the knowledge and tools to recognize potential warning signs and help prevent substance-related issues, she said.
A key part of the program is a mock teenager's bedroom, featuring everyday items and unconventional hiding places that may be used to conceal drugs, vaping products, alcohol, and other substances.
The program also will go over current youth slang and terminology; common methods used to conceal substances, and emerging trends involving drugs, vaping, and alcohol.
It will include prevention strategies for parents and caregivers and local resources for treatment, recovery, and support.
The program is set for 6 p.m. on Nov. 2 at Civic Plaza, 270 Chambers Bridge Road, Brick. It is presented by the Brick Township Police Department, Brick Municipal Alliance Committee, and the New Jersey State Police Operation RISE.
