2 Adults, 2 Children Seriously Injured In Brick Crash: Police

One adult and a 2-year-old boy were flown to Jersey Shore, while the other adult and a 10-year-old boy were taken by ambulance.

BRICK, NJ — Four people were seriously injured Friday morning when a sedan and a minivan collided on Old Hooper Avenue near Tunes Brook Road in Brick, police said.

Danielle Canaley, 37, of Manchester, and a 2-year-old boy who was her passenger were flown to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, while Vincent Vargas, 47, and the 10-year-old boy who was his passenger were taken to Jersey Shore by ambulance, Sgt. Neal Pedersen said Friday evening. Information on their conditions was not available Friday evening.

Pedersen said the crash happened shortly after 11 a.m. Canaley was driving north on Old Hooper Avenue in a 2002 Saturn four-door sedan and was approaching Tunes Brook Road when her car crossed the center line into the southbound lane and hit the 2009 Chrysler Town & Country that was being driven by Vargas head-on, Pedersen said.

Brick Police Emergency Medical Services and MONOC paramedics responded along with fire companies from, Pioneer Hose, Breton Woods and Silverton for extrications, Pedersen said.

Laurelton Fire Company arranged the landing zone at Drum Point Sports Complex for MONOC 1 and Med Star 6 helicopters to take Canaley and the boy from her car to the hospital, Pedersen said.

Old Hooper Avenue was closed between Tunes Brook Road and Beaverson Boulevard for nearly four hours during the investigation and reopened at 3:10 p.m.

Pedersen, Patrolman Keith Donnelly and Patrolman Scott Dierking from the Brick Police Traffic Safety Unit along with the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office Fatal Accident Investigation unit and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department investigated the crash.

Police told drivers to stay away from Old Hooper Avenue and Tunesbrook Drive while they were dealing with the accident around 1:30 p.m.
